Patio Season Isn't Over: Louvered & Retractable Roofs
In the Lowcountry, changing seasons can mean the best weeks of the year are just beginning. The humidity breaks, the marsh glows gold in the late afternoon, and evenings turn cool enough to linger outside long after dinner. For a few short months, the porch, patio and pool deck become the most sought-after rooms of the house. The weather doesn't always cooperate, though. Bright afternoons give way to passing showers, and UV rays are just as harmful when the sky is overcast.
A louvered or retractable roof, sometimes known as pergolas, allow patios to thrive through climate changes. They provide adjustable overhead coverage that completes an outdoor room. You decide how much light, air and shelter your space needs, hour by hour and season by season.
A Roof When You Need It, Open Sky When You Don't
A solid roof offers dependable cover but closes off the sky. The flexibility of louvered and retractable roofs can deliver sunshine and starlight on demand. They provide durable protection from UV rays and rain with the freedom to enjoy an open space whenever you want it.
What is a Louvered Roof?
A louvered roof is a pergola style structure topped with rotating aluminum blades. When the blades are open, air and light can move freely through the space. Tilt them, and you filter glare while keeping the breeze. Close them completely for maximum overhead coverage.
All louvered roofs feature gapless louvers that transform into a solid roof, either manually or automatically. A manual louvered roof system is operated by hand crank, while a motorized system is operated with just the touch of a button. The R-BLADE™ Motorized Louvered Pergola even has weather sensors that adjust the louvers automatically, allowing you to enjoy your patio freely while staying protected.
What is a Retractable Roof?
Similar to louvered systems, a retractable roof allows you to decide the level of coverage your patio needs at any given moment. Instead of rotating blades, it uses a fabric roof that extends across the space for shade and shelter, and retracts completely for open sky. And our signature retractable roof, the Coastal Haven™Retractable Pergola, is engineered to circulate air and drain rainwater while open. Retractable roof systems are ideal for virtually any outdoor space that would benefit from coverage.
7 Places to Put a Retractable Roof System
- Outdoor kitchens where the cook stays comfortable and smoke can easily escape.
- Rooftop terraces that get full sun with little natural shade.
- Courtyard dining for open-air dinners under the stars and cover for afternoon storms.
- Gardens & conservatories where plants need sunlight but guests need shade.
- Waterfront decks where views matter but casted glare can be intense.
- Outdoor living rooms that need to protect upholstered furniture, rugs and décor.
- Spas & hot tubs where you can soak under the stars or stay sheltered from wind and rain.
Fully Convertible Outdoor and Indoor Spaces
One of the most practical benefits of louvered & retractable roofs are what happens when you're not using the space. With the roof closed, you can safely leave patio furniture, outdoor electronics and other valuable belongings in place without worrying about damage. When the sun comes out, simply open or retract the roof and enjoy the outdoors again. Your space transforms from a sheltered room one day to an open-air terrace the next.
More Possibilities With Adjustable Roof Systems
Effortless Enclosure
Imagine a deck that's an open-air retreat at noon and a cozy enclosed room by evening. When you pair a louvered or retractable roof with patio enclosure options like custom curtains or motorized screens, you can achieve a full patio enclosure without a major renovation.
Perfect Your Pergola
Already have a pergola that you love? Give it an upgrade with a fabric retractable roof. Retractable systems can be custom tailored to many fixed, existing structures.
Design Without Compromise
Overhead protection lets you create the outdoor space you've always wanted. Choose the deep-cushioned sofa, the outdoor TV, or the freestanding fireplace without worrying how they'll hold up outdoors.
Built for Coastal Conditions
Salt air, intense sun and sudden storms are hard on outdoor structures. Our systems are made from durable aluminum and then powder coated to hold a clean finish for years with minimal upkeep.
Every product we offer is designed to suit the home it serves. In historic neighborhoods, that might mean a restrained profile and a finish that blends with existing trim and millwork. On a contemporary pool deck or waterfront home, it might mean clean lines and bolder colors. In every case, the goal is an impeccable roof system that looks as if it were always part of the existing architecture.
